Awarding Body:  City & Guilds Level 5 Diploma in Leadership & Management for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services (3978)

City & Guilds is the leading awarding body for this qualification.

Target Group:

This qualification is appropriate for you if you hold managerial responsibility within the care sector and children and young People’s Services for example, a manager, deputy or assistant or advanced practitioners or Proprietor.

You will need to ensure that you are competent in the area you wish to manage and you meet the requirements of the awarding body. In order for you to enrol on the course, you must have a job role as a Manager or Deputies, Advanced practitioners in services such as homes for older people, people with learning disabilities, people with mental health problem and domiciliary / nursing care.

You will choose 1 of the following 6 pathways:

  • Children and Young People's Residential Management
  • Children and Young People's Management
  • Children and Young People's Advanced Practice
  • Adults' Residential Management
  • Adults' Management
  • Adults' Advanced Practice

Course Aim:

To provide you with the skills and knowledge to enable you to carry out your managerial roles and responsibilities up to the minimum national Standard.


Leadership and Management of Care Services – There are no fixed period for completion, however depending on experience most participants complete within 12 months. The course consists of 1 full day Induction and 4 additional Workplace assessments by Crownlinks Assessor at a time convenient to you. Learner has additional option of attending various scheduled workshop as may be arranged from time to time by the Centre in our training room at Barking. Crownlinks Assessor will come to your workplace to observe you for a few hours on a single day for about three or four times.  Tutorial and feedback will be delivered on a one-to-one or group basis. You will also enjoy unlimited access to learning resources from Crownlinks Int. Virtual Learning Environments. Unlimited e-mail and telephone support throughout the duration of your award.

Course Content:

Each unit within the Diploma has a credit rating and to achieve the QCF Level 5 Diploma in Health and Social Care and Children and Young People learners must complete knowledge and competence units equalling an overall 80 credits. Learners must achieve 64 credits from the mandatory units and a further 12 credits from the 1st optional units selections and a remaining 4 credits from the 2nd optional unit selection.

All the pathways share 5 core units:

  • Use and develop systems that promote communication
  • Promote professional development
  • Champion equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Develop health and safety and risk management policies procedures and practices in health and social care or children and young people's settings
  • Working in partnership in health and social care, and children and young people's settings.

For each pathway, you will also need to complete a certain number of optional units. Examples of available units include:

  • Lead person-centred practice
  • Support individuals at the end of life
  • Manage finance in a health and social care or children and young people's setting
  • Explore models of disability
  • Understand the needs of children who are vulnerable and experiencing poverty and disadvantage
    Identify and act upon immediate risk of danger to substance misusers.

Assessment takes place through evaluation of work-based performance, presenting evidence, witness testimony and questioning. A portfolio of evidence is produced which demonstrates that the candidate can perform to the level described. Participants will all have a vocationally competent assessor who will help assemble the portfolio and prepare for assessment. In addition, candidates will have access to email and telephone support throughout their programme together with resources as required.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion you will be awarded a Leadership & Management in Care Services Award certified through City & Guilds. All successful Leadership & Management in Care Services Award certifications is subject to an external verification process conducted by the awarding body.

Demonstrating skills, knowledge and ability comparable to the level of competence required for the award. Identifying what you need to do to be fully competent.

Course Fees:

Leadership & Management in Care Services Award normally costs £2,500 excluding VAT. However, for a limited period, the award places are currently available at a negotiable price. An initial administration fee of £250 and a deposit of £500 totalling £750 excluding VAT are made, followed by 6 monthly instalments of £291.67 excluding VAT if applicable.

Please note: It is a requirement of the course is that you are observed at your workplace carrying out your managerial role and responsibility. If this is 25 miles or more from our training centre, an additional cost will be charged.

However, the course price drops to £2,250 excluding VAT if you decide to pay in full, saving you £250!

Client S, proprietor of a 10bedded (mental illness category) home in Essex. “I felt being discriminated against and willing to challenge CQC’s report and attitude in court but Crownlinks helped us focus on the priorities for improving standards, members attended numerous CQC meetings with me and help restoring the reputation of the home and now I feel much more secure and confident”.


This home was targeted by an extremely zealous CQC inspector who made 28 statutory requirements and issued several legal enforcement notices. When the proprietor contacted us, it was obvious that the CQC were building a case to close the home and the local authority had placed it on their referrals blacklist making it impossible to fill their bed. We quickly identified the crucial areas of genuine non-compliance and provided detailed advice and practical quality monitoring audit, drafted a longer term action plan for presentation to CQC at an arranged meeting. We also advised on areas where the more extreme positions adopted by the inspector could be legitimately challenged.
